Sifnos

One of the first things that strikes you when arriving on Sifnos is how lush the island is. On leaving the port you are soon greeted with terraces of olive groves. Caper bushes and herbs grow abundantly along the roadside. This was a striking contrast to other islands we’ve visited where the old stone terraces can lie empty and quite often in ruin, giving the landscape a more barron appearance.

One of our reasons for visiting Sifnos was its reputation for its good food and fresh produce grown in the fertile soils of the island.

Sifnosians seem to still embrace the stone edged terraces that hug the hillsides and grow their produce using the natural springs to irrigate their allotments.
