Folegandros local cheese pie with onion
With 24 hours left on the island we realised we still had not tried the local pie, Καλασούνα, or kalasouna.
There are only 2 traditional bakeries on Folegandros, one in the Chora and the other in Ano Merio.
We received our directions from a local and jumped in the car and drove up to Ano Merio, looking out for signs to the bakery as we drove along the narrow road.
We found the bakery before it closed late in the morning. In the simple cabinets the pies were displayed, both savoury and sweet pies and pastries.
The kalasouna pie has a filling of local goats cheese and lightly caramelised onions, delicious, and well worth seeking out the bakery to get a piece... or two.
While you're in the bakery, pick out some of the local sweet pastries. We picked a couple out, took them back to our room and enjoyed them with a coffee.
In attempt to help you find this hidden gem on Folegandros, here's a few photos of the "signage" out on the road. If you are driving from the Chora towards Ano Merio, this laneway to the bakery will be on your left. The signs are quite small on both sides of the laneway.
The laneway is narrow, and gets narrower round that corner, trust me, I drove up there in our little car and then had to reverse out. Best park on the road, we parked just to the left of the photo below, and walked along the laneway to the bakery.
And if you're lucky you may even have a beautiful encounter with this gracious gentleman sitting outside the bakery door.
Hope you find the bakery, and if you get lost... ask a local for directions!
Cheers
